Tis the Season For Giving Back: James Parrinello
I believe that companies need to be a little more aware of the repercussions of their actions. Last Christmas Goldman Sachs paid out hundreds of millions in bonuses as per usual. However, what wasn't usual, and what was appalling, was the fact that they paid out these hundreds of millions in bonuses after having the largest worldwide company layoff in Goldman Sachs History. If they were in such bad shape and had to layoff so many people then where did all the money for the bonuses come from? I think that even though they gave back the money they should have had the common sense and where with all to not have made the decision to pay out the bonuses in the first place. They probably could have kept two thirds of the staff they fired if they hadn't paid out the bonuses. Companies other than Goldman Sachs have made similar mistakes. But I think the moral of the story is that companies need to be a little more socially aware of the decisions that they make. I believe that until we are out of this crisis, maybe companies should cut back on the bonuses and try to keep more employees on staff in jobs.

In todays economy people are struggling to survive while some are still living the good life. This couldnt be more evident than in the case of the GM and Ford CEO's going to ask for money from congress so their company could surveve. Each CEO took thier own private plane to Washington DC with the claim that they are all struggling financially. If they were struggling then why do they have a private plane? To make matters worse why do they all have thier own plane? for the cost of all their flights just from Detroit to DC far exceeds $50,000. That would be about a years salary of one of the thousands of employees that were laid of by the companies. What has really hurt our economy is the large wage gap there is between heads of compaines and thier employees. Corperations need to crack down on the lavish lifestyles some people in the company are living and start raising wages of the people doing all the grunt work.

Last season the news was all over AIG after they threw a massive christmas party weeks after receiving stimulus money. It didn't end there, though. Nothing has been more transparent to show that corporate social responsibility has gone out the door in the big-time multi-million and even billion dollar companies than around last Christmas time. Bankrupt companies still spent millions of dollars on christmas parties last year and cut checks for millions in bonuses after massive layouts following the worst recession in years. What is going to happen this Christmas?
We can only hope that this will be the season for a little more giving back and a little more recognition for corporate social responsibility. I think that big companies should have a protocol for giving back. Community service and giving back to your neighborhood and world is essential for big companies to remember when they are getting caught up in multi-million dollar transactions every day. Perhaps buyers and consumers should pay attention to which companies make an effort to give back and this christmas season, even try to purchase their gifts and essential items from companies with a conscience.
Well, what will go on this season is yet to tell, but we are hoping this will be the season for giving back!
